Keyhole Digs Beside Live Services

Water Box & Curb Stop Repair

AMG Hydrovac exposes, repairs, replaces, raises and thaws water service boxes and curb stops across Toronto and the GTA without touching the live service underneath. Built for municipal water crews and their contractors on the city side, and for plumbers and homeowners on the private side, including frozen services in winter. Every box is photographed and depth-recorded before we backfill.

What Goes Wrong With a Water Box

A water box is the vertical sleeve that lets a crew reach the curb stop, the shut-off valve on a water service, from the surface. The stop underneath is usually fine; the access is the problem. Boxes get buried under new asphalt or sod, sheared off by snowplows, bent until the key will not seat, or sunk below grade until nobody can find them.

  • Locate and expose buried or paved-over boxes
  • Repair bent or broken boxes and reseat the operating rod
  • Replace boxes that are past repair, set on the existing stop
  • Raise or lower boxes to finished grade after regrading or repaving

Why Hydrovac Beside a Live Service

A curb stop sits on a small-diameter service, usually copper or plastic, sometimes older lead or galvanized, buried below the frost line in GTA clay and fill, with gas, hydro and telecom in the same boulevard strip. A backhoe bucket working blind beside that pipe is how a box repair turns into a service replacement and a flooded boulevard.

We break the soil with pressurized water and vacuum it into the tank, so nothing mechanical touches the pipe or the stop. The hole is a keyhole the size of the box, not a trench, so there is less sidewalk, curb and sod to put back.

  • Ontario One Call tickets confirmed before we mobilize; private locates arranged for unregistered services
  • Remote hose up to 90 m (300 ft), so the truck stays on the road while we dig the boulevard or front yard

Frozen Services in Winter

Frost in open ground around Toronto and the GTA goes deep enough in a hard winter to freeze shallow services. We run heated water, so we dig through frozen boulevard the same way we dig in July, expose the frozen section of service or box, and thaw it in place.

A frozen service is an emergency call. The owner answers dispatch 24/7 and gives you a real ETA before you commit.

City Side, Private Side and Permits

In most Ontario municipalities the service is split at the curb stop or property line. The municipality maintains the main, the connection and the stop; the owner is responsible from there to the building. In many municipalities only the water crew may operate the stop.

We work both sides. City-side work runs under the water crew's or contractor's own road-occupancy and utility-cut permits and traffic control plan; the operator is Book 7 trained for the travelled road. On the private side, homeowners and plumbers deal with us directly. If the fault turns out to be on the city side, we tell you before we dig so you can call the municipality.

  • WSIB clearance and a certificate of insurance ($5M general liability, $1M limited pollution, $2M auto) for your vendor file
  • Account pricing on a PO or approved account for municipalities and contractors; homeowners get the same up-front quote

What the Finished Box Looks Like

A box is finished when a crew can find it, open it and turn the stop without a second visit: plumb, flush to finished grade, cleared of soil down to the stop, rod seated so a standard key engages, cap on. We backfill and compact in lifts so the box does not sink or tilt with the first frost.

Before backfill you get a photo of the exposed stop and box, with measured depth to the top of the service, in the daily report. Permanent surface restoration (sod, asphalt or concrete) is settled when you book: the quote states whether the hole is left backfilled and ready for your restoration contractor, or whether restoration is included.

Water Box & Curb Stop Repair, Answered

Homeowners get the same up-front quote as everyone else: send the address and what is wrong and you get it in writing the same business day, or call for it on the phone. Municipal crews and contractors get hourly account pricing on a PO or approved account, with restoration settled when you book. Either way the quote shows the hourly rate with a minimum per dispatch, mobilization and disposal as separate lines, and there is no fuel surcharge.

Yes, on the private side. We expose the box and service, repair, replace or raise the box, backfill, and hand over the photo and depth record.

Usually. We start from the municipality's service record or tie-in card, if you can get it, and the locate, then daylight down to the box or the service with hydrovac rather than guessing with a bucket. If the box was sheared off below the asphalt, we expose the stop and set a new box on it.

The hole is only as wide as the box needs. Restoration is settled before we come, so you know whether the hole is left backfilled and ready for your contractor or whether restoration is included in the quote.
